Concurrent Technologies controls Intel® Pentium® M processor Power Dissipation

May 2004 –To meet customer demands for even lower power dissipation Concurrent Technologies now support Enhanced Intel® SpeedStep® Technology on their range of VME (VP 305/01x) and CompactPCI® (PP 310/01x) single board computers, including extended operating temperatures. By utilizing the Intel® Pentium® M processor they allow a system designer to have greater control over the thermal and power characteristics of the board. Tests on Concurrent Technologies boards show benefits, when stepping a 1.6 GHz board down to 600 MHz, of up to four times less +5V current. Therefore, depending on the application requirements, the processor frequency operating point of a Concurrent Technologies Intel Pentium M processor board can be pre-set in the BIOS, or controlled dynamically via the application’s operating system.

Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology enables the system software to control the processor’s operating frequency and input voltage. For example, the 1.6 GHz processor has 6 different frequency points ranging from 1.6 GHz down to 600 MHz. Unlike legacy versions of Intel SpeedStep Technology, which required hardware support through the chipset, the software model now provides a centralized implementation that enables the software to access the processor and its voltage regulator without using the chipset. This reduction in hardware and improved software interface has reduced the processor core unavailability time from 250μs to 10μs; the software can perform a frequency/voltage state transition by simply writing to one register.

Concurrent Technologies VME and CompactPCI single board computers, utilizing the Intel Pentium M processor, can support a variety of operating systems that utilize the software model behind Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology.

Concurrent Technologies single board computers currently utilizing a 1.6 GHz or 1.1 GHz Intel Pentium M processor are…
